Anthropic Debuts Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code, Underscored by $3.5B Investment

Anthropic is debuting Claude 3.7 Sonnet, the company’s most intelligent model to date and the first hybrid reasoning model on the market, and Claude Code, a new innovation in AI coding, according to Anthropic. This news is also accompanied by the company’s recent funding round, having raised $3.5 billion—bringing Anthropic’s post-money valuation to $61.5 billion. Both Claude 3.7 and Anthropic’s latest investment reflect the company’s push for innovation on the AI front.

Claude 3.7 Sonnet is a model capable of producing near-instantaneous responses or more long-form, step-by-step thinking that is transparent to the user. This is an embodiment of Anthropic’s latest philosophy toward its reasoning models: Just as humans use a single brain for rapid responses and those that are more in-depth, Anthropic believes that reasoning models should match this integration, as opposed to using two separate models.

This new integrated, seamless approach to reasoning models is demonstrated by Claude 3.7 Sonnet being both a traditional large language model (LLM) and a reasoning model combined. Meaning, users can determine when they want the model to respond in a quick, “normal” fashion, or in a manner that takes longer before answering—or in its “extended thinking mode.” In the latter, Claude 3.7 Sonnet self-reflects before delivering a response to a query, thereby increasing its performance on more complex tasks—including those related to math, physics, instruction-following, coding, and more.

In its API iteration, users can determine how long they want Claude 3.7 Sonnet to think, ultimately offering greater control over speed, quality, and costs.

Additionally, Anthropic noted that in its development of its reasoning models, the company has optimized less for math and computer science competition problems and more toward business-relevant, real-world tasks.

Anthropic’s latest model is further accompanied by Claude Code, a new command line tool for agentic coding currently available in a limited research preview. This allows developers to delegate substantial engineering tasks to Claude directly from their terminal, acting as an active collaborator. Claude Code can search and read code, edit files, write and run tests, commit and push code to GitHub, and use command line tools.

Underscoring the release of Claude 3.7 Sonnet is Anthropic’s massive funding round, which was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, and more. This investment will be leveraged to fuel the development of next-gen AI systems, as well as expand its compute capacity, grow its research in mechanistic interpretability and alignment, and accelerate its international expansion, according to Anthropic.

At its core, Anthropic is determined to create AI systems that act as “true collaborators,” working alongside humans to complete complex tasks, integrate information, and drive business impact. The funding round will help Anthropic build on its product momentum, as evidenced by the Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code launches.
