IBM Debuts ATOM, an Agentic AI System for Autonomous Cybersecurity

IBM is unveiling Autonomous Threat Operations Machine (ATOM), an agentic AI system engineered to drive autonomous security operations paired with predictive threat intelligence. This new capability delivers autonomous threat triage, investigation, and remediation with little need for human intervention, infusing threat protection with agentic AI technology.

At its core, ATOM helps accelerate threat detection while executing a variety of security processes to remediate risks. Capable of identifying threats, analyzing alerts with enrichment and contextualization, performing risk analysis, and creating and executing investigation and remediation plans, ATOM dramatically enhances the security analyst experience, according to IBM.

"Organizations continue to be challenged by increasingly stealthy and persistent cyberthreats, which are slowing detection and response times," said Mark Hughes, global managing partner for cybersecurity services, IBM. "By delivering agentic AI capabilities, IBM is automating threat hunting to help improve detection and response processes so clients can unlock new value from security operations and free up already scarce security resources."

ATOM’s AI agentic framework and orchestration engine is formed by several individual agents, each working to improve enterprises’ existing security analytics solutions. With its powerful automations, security analytics can focus more on high-priority threats as opposed to wasting valuable effort on low-priority risks or false positives, IBM explained.

In addition to the launch of ATOM, IBM is unveiling the X-Force Predictive Threat Intelligence (PTI) agent for ATOM, an agent utilizing industry-specific AI foundation models to generate predictive threat insights. This agent augments the human analysis workflow with AI, curating proactive threat intelligence based on proprietary AI foundational models and its training on cybersecurity data. Synthesizing a plethora of information—from open-source RSS feeds to APIs and user-supplied organizational context—PTI offers a fully tailored threat intelligence feed that helps organizations stay ahead of evolving threats.
