OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Work, Powered by Latest Model GPT-5.6

OpenAI is introducing ChatGPT Work—an agent in ChatGPT that helps users take on more ambitious tasks.

According to OpenAI, it can gather information across apps and workflows to create finished materials such as sheets, slides, docs, and web apps, and stay with complex projects for hours by breaking them into smaller steps and completing them independently.

The new ChatGPT desktop app brings Chat, Work, and Codex together: Chat for everyday help, Work for complex multi-step tasks, and Codex for developers and technical professionals.

A unified plugins directory connects ChatGPT to tools such as Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, calendars, and CRMs. Scheduled Tasks can keep recurring work moving, while the desktop app adds an in-app browser and Computer Use for deeper work across websites and local apps. 

To better manage these tasks, ChatGPT Work is powered by the latest frontier model, GPT-5.6. GPT-5.6 makes ChatGPT state of the art at reasoning through multi-step tasks and creating materials that follow templates and reference files, said OpenAI.

Sol, Terra, and Luna, the GPT-5.6 family of models, will be rolling out in ChatGPT, Codex, and the API. Sol sets a new standard for intelligence and efficiency, delivering state-of-the-art performance across coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity, and science with fewer tokens and lower cost. In addition: 

• Improves ChatGPT’s ability to reason through multi-step tasks and create materials that follow templates and reference files.
• Launches with ultra mode, the highest-performance setting to accelerate your most ambitious work by coordinating multiple agents to work in parallel. 
• Improves artifact quality across presentations, documents, and spreadsheets, and works better with your templates. 
• Strengthens computer-use capabilities, providing a step change in design. 

OpenAI is also updating its Chrome extension to make it possible to use ChatGPT directly in Chrome’s sidebar. These capabilities build on what the company learned from Atlas and from the users who helped the team understand how agentic tools can make browser-based work more useful.

OpenAI will begin sunsetting the standalone Atlas browser and will share information with users about how to transition to ChatGPT.

The shutdown of Atlas comes after the discontinuation of the Sora app—an AI video generator—earlier this year.
