OpenAI Debuts Conversation Organization with Projects in ChatGPT
As Day 7 of the 12 Days of OpenAI—where for 12 days of December, the company will launch new product innovations for the AI space—arrived, Kevin Weil, CPO at OpenAI, debuted the company’s latest—and highly requested—innovation: Projects in ChatGPT. Now, ChatGPT users can customize ChatGPT conversations to meet the needs and parameters of specific projects.
The launch of Projects in ChatGPT reflects users’ desires to organize conversations in ChatGPT, according to Thomas Dimson, member of technical staff at OpenAI. Projects in ChatGPT enable users to create a “project,” or a unique folder for queries. Within these projects, users can add instructions—which tailor the way ChatGPT responds to queries inside of the project—as well as add relevant files that will be accessible via chats.
Projects in ChatGPT offers a streamlined, drag-and-drop interface that makes it easy for users to configure their projects. Existing chats can be added to Projects, where through conversation search—another new ChatGPT capability—users can locate a specific query and drag it to a project. Projects is also integrated with ChatGPT’s Canvas Tool, which can be deferred to when necessary, as dictated by the organizer’s instructions. Any data uploaded to the project can be referenced and validated through users’ queries.
Projects also offers a lot of utility for engineering tasks, where a project can be tailored to a templating format or code style. By uploading JSON files and providing Projects with detailed instructions, users can generate modifications to a template based on a unique query and available files, such as, for example, “Modify the baseline template in Canvas to incorporate personal information and social links.”
