OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 Forwards Unsupervised Learning for More ‘Natural’ AI

OpenAI is releasing the research preview of GPT-4.5, OpenAI’s “largest and best model to date,” the company described. Centralized around a more “natural” feel, GPT-4.5 is a result of advanced AI capabilities achieved by scaling unsupervised learning.

GPT-4.5 is designed with a broader knowledgebase, more capable of following user intent while being useful for an array of writing and programming tasks, as well as solving practical problems. It promises a greater capacity to recognize patterns, highlight connections, reduce hallucinations, and produce creative insights without reasoning, according to OpenAI.

This is accomplished by scaling unsupervised learning, which increases model accuracy and intuition. This is different from scaling reasoning, which enables models to solve complex STEM or logic problems by increasing its ability to think before responding.

GPT-4.5 is a result of scaling unsupervised learning, where compute and data are scaled up, offering a broader, deeper understanding of the world. Trained on Microsoft Azure AI supercomputers, GPT-4.5 is fundamentally designed to better recognize human intent and nuance, and therefore its steerability and capacity for natural conversation and human collaboration. With that being said, GPT-4.5 is better fit for general-purpose, creative queries as opposed to concrete, mathematical or scientific purposes, according to OpenAI.

Its release into research preview is designed for OpenAI to better understand the model’s strengths and limitations, the company noted. The research preview is to also improve the model’s knowledgeability so it may operate from an even stronger foundation for reasoning, as well as improve overall model safety.

Now, ChatGPT Pro users can select GPT-4.5 from the model picker on web, mobile, and desktop, with availability for Plus and Team users to follow, then to Enterprise and Edu users. GPT-4.5 is also being previewed in the Chat Completions API, Assistants API, and Batch API to developers on all paid usage tiers.
