OpenAI Unveils New Channels for ChatGPT During its Holiday Event
As the 12 Days of OpenAI—where for 12 days of December, the company will launch new product innovations for the AI space—continued, days 10 and 11 unveiled exciting new innovations that bring fresh ways to interact with ChatGPT.
Day 10 of 12 Days of OpenAI emphasized accessibility, adhering to OpenAI’s mission of making artificial general intelligence beneficial to everyone, according to Kevin Weil, CPO at OpenAI. Continuing to help reduce the barriers to AI, OpenAI debuted ChatGPT for telephone—where users can call (in the U.S.) or WhatsApp 1-800-ChatGPT.
With this experience, callers can talk with ChatGPT via phone call, asking questions and receiving answers through real-time voice interaction. For example, if traveling on a road trip, users can call ChatGPT and inquire about local architecture; or if speaking to someone in another language, users can call ChatGPT and ask for translation help.

On Day 11, Weil explained that “as our models get increasingly powerful, ChatGPT will more and more become agentic. And that means we’ll go beyond just questions and answers—ChatGPT will begin doing things for you…[and] desktop apps are a big part of that.”
ChatGPT’s desktop app is the avenue in which OpenAI’s agentic mission will take shape. The desktop app, when given permission, can help automate a variety of tasks in a way that a browser tab cannot.
ChatGPT’s fully native ChatGPT desktop app is lightweight and exists in its own window, limiting context switching. When working with an app on your computer, the ChatGPT desktop app can pull in context from another app to respond to a user query. The speakers noted that, until you give ChatGPT access to a specific app, it will never look at an app’s content, ensuring the user maintains full control.
The ChatGPT desktop app employs every feature and model available in ChatGPT, bringing the full breadth of its utility to a user’s desktop. For example, the desktop app can initiate Advanced Data Analysis to create a bar graph based on another app’s data.
